Join us for an informative webinar to understand more about the ambitious National Nuclear Strategic Skills Plan, designed to meet the skills needs of the UK nuclear sector and ensure its workforce is fit for the future.

We’ll discuss the Plan’s highlights, deliverables, milestones and what they mean for the future of our sector.

Key industry representatives, including Beccy Pleasant, Lynne Matthews, Chris Nattress, and Robin Goldsworthy, will lead the discussion, which will be followed by a live Q&A.

Learners will be able to gain vital skills to begin their careers in nuclear health physics through a new intensive training course.

The Nuclear Skills Delivery Group (NSDG), industry-leading experts NUVIA and National College for Nuclear (NCfN), have launched a Health Physics Bootcamp, offering a comprehensive education in health physics principles, radiation protection and safety.

The Health Physics Bootcamp is one of a series of bootcamps being developed to address the pressing skills needs for the most critical professions in the nuclear sector – recognising the importance of building a skilled workforce to maintain safety, drive innovation and support growth in the industry.

The intensive seven-week training programme is designed to accelerate the learning of newly recruited health physics monitors, helping them become effective in their roles and support their continued professional development.

Designed to turbo charge existing skills activity in the nuclear sector as part of the National Nuclear Strategic Plan for Skills, the Health Physics Bootcamp combines theoretical instruction with hands-on practical exercises and real-world case studies, providing participants with a dynamic learning experience.

It also includes personalised mentorship by experienced nuclear industry professionals, guiding learners through their training with insights, advice, and best practice.

The launch is a significant milestone in building the skills for the nation’s nuclear capability while providing a unique opportunity for aspiring professionals or career switchers to acquire specialised knowledge and practical skills directly relevant to their career aspirations. It underscores the industry's commitment to nurturing talent and fostering a skilled workforce capable of meeting the challenges and opportunities presented by the evolving nuclear landscape.

Nuclear Skills Programme Director for the NSDB, Beccy Pleasant, said:

"This exciting collaboration is an important milestone in growing the skilled, motivated and inspired workforce required to deliver the UK’s priorities for national security and energy resilience."

"This bootcamp will be a crucial starting point for learners to develop their careers in this exciting field"

Health Physics Director at NUVIA, Greg Antill, said:

"We’re proud to collaborate with NSDG in launching this transformative programme, dedicated to shaping the next generation of Health Physicists. This programme represents a significant milestone in our shared mission to promote the fantastic opportunity the nuclear sector has to offer."

Strategic Partnership Director at NCfN, Donna Connor, said:

"NCfN is delighted to support the NSDG and NUVIA in the development of the Nuclear Health Physics Bootcamp. This collaborative effort presents an exceptional opportunity to design a curriculum tailored to nurture fresh talent and pave the way for their entry into the nuclear sector."

Today (March 25) the UK government announced further plans for the sector, which include investment to help create more than 5,000 new apprenticeships over the next four years and ensure the sector has the talent needed to fill 40,000 new jobs by 2030.

Following this announcement, the Nuclear Skills Strategy Group (NSSG) will become the Nuclear Skills Delivery Group (NSDG), which will drive day-to-day delivery of the National Nuclear Strategic Plan for Skills and will be led by the NSDB.

Stakeholders from across UK nuclear have already collaborated to launch Destination Nuclear, a national campaign to attract people to the sector and a single recruitment portal to raise awareness of the wide range of roles available.

The NSDB’s newly-appointed Nuclear Skills Programme Director, Beccy Pleasant, said:

"Today’s announcement marks an exciting new chapter for the UK nuclear sector.

"The sector is set for unprecedented growth and the need for more people and skills is already affecting employers.

"The announcement of this important investment from government and industry will allow us to put in place the programme of activities to tackle these challenges."

Co-chair of the NSDG, Julie Morris OBE, said:

"It’s fantastic to see the efforts of the Nuclear Skills  Taskforce come to fruition and lead to a tangible, funded plan to address the skills challenges facing the nuclear sector.

"Today’s announcement marks a major step forward in delivering the nuclear workforce of the future."

What does your role involve?

As a Programme Management degree apprentice, my role involves supporting the planning, execution, and delivery of projects. I’m responsible for defining project scopes, creating timelines, allocating resources and ensuring projects are completed in budget and on schedule. Collaborating closely with people right across the board is crucial.

What does a typical day look like?

A typical day involves managing project timelines, participating in team meetings to assess progress, and identifying and mitigating potential risks. I spend time working with colleagues and stakeholders to address any issues, provide updates and keep the project on track.

What has been your biggest challenge?

My biggest challenge has been adjusting to the length of project lifecycles in the nuclear sector. Projects typically span several years or even decades – and this requires effective communication, adjusting project plans and working closely with the team. This brought home to me the importance of flexibility and adaptability.

What are you looking forward to working on in the year ahead?

I’m excited about the launch of Destination Nuclear. I’m grateful for the opportunity to be involved in such a large and important project, and I look forward to the campaign showcasing what careers in the nuclear sector has to offer. I’m confident it will attract and retain the workforce required to deliver the sector’s ambitions.

Why did you choose an apprenticeship?

I chose a programme management degree apprenticeship because it offered a unique opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios. The combination of hands-on experience and mentoring lets me develop practical skills while contributing to meaningful projects, while having the opportunity to pursue a degree was also very important to me.

What advice would you give to anyone considering an apprenticeship?

Anyone considering a route similar to mine should actively seek out a range of project experiences: engage with your team, learn from experienced colleagues and embrace challenges as opportunities to learn. Effective communication and adaptability are key skills in programme management, so be prepared to collaborate and remember to build a strong foundation during the apprenticeship – this will set you up for a fulfilling career in programme management.
